新番組、池波正太郎の原作を素材として、テレビドラマ化したもの。仕掛人、即ち殺し屋を主人公とした異色の時代劇で、三人の仕掛人には、山村聰、林与一、緒形拳の三人が扮し、個性を生かしたユニークな殺し屋を演じる。この三人のタレントは、ブラウン管では理想的な父親といったイメージの山村聰、甘いマスクの二枚目スター、林与一、これまで一貫してマジメ人間、善意の人を演じてきた緒形拳といずれも「殺し屋」というタイプではない。その三人の変身ぶりと、これまでにない新しいイメージの殺し屋が見もの。また一話、二話を担当する深作欣二監督の趣好をこらした「殺しの演出」も話題の一つである。
