Eind jaren zestig begon de Spaanse cinema een enorme hoeveelheid horrorgenrefilms te produceren: internationale markten werden geopend, de productie was continu, er werd een klein sterrensysteem gecreëerd, evenals een solide groep gespecialiseerde regisseurs. Hoewel buitenlandse trends werden nagebootst, bood de Spaanse horror een bijzondere benadering van seks, bloed en geweld. Het was een uiterst ongebruikelijke artistieke beweging in het Spanje van Franco.
