Amikor a szövetségesek 1944 júniusában megindították a partraszállási hadműveletet Normandiában, Hitler a helyszínre vezényelte a 'Das Reich' nevű hírhedt SS Páncélos Hadosztályt. Az akkoriban Délnyugat-Franciaországban állomásozó 15 ezer fős különítmény méltó maradt az Ukrajnában és Fehéroroszországban szerzett borzalmas híréhez: amerre jártak, vér, tömeges akasztások és lakatlanná vált falvak jelezték útjukat.
