Det er december 1870, og amerikanske Tilly rejser rundt i Europa med sin velhavende bedstemor Isabella. De to tager til Irland i håbet om, at jarlen af Shannon, som engang var Isabellas bejler og som selv er en talentfuld forfatter, kan hjælpe med at få udgivet Tillys arbejde. Da de ankommer til Shannon Castle, står det straks klart, at den adelige familie er i store økonomiske vanskeligheder. Lady Shannon har imidlertid en plan om at få sin søn Cameron gift med Tilly, så han kan arve Isabellas store formue. Der er blot en mindre forhindring: Tilly er allerede forlovet. Så Cameron får besked på at skrue op for charmen, og det lader til at virke.
