Ben Matlock je velmi drahý obhájce. Inkasuje si 100 000 dolarů za jeden případ. Sice to není nejlevnější, ale stojí to za to, protože s ním vždy vyhrajete! Matlock byl inspirován slavným Perry Masonem, také je věhlasným advokátem, který s podporou vyšetřovatelů (v první sezoně i vlastní dcerou) nejen obhájí nevinného klienta, ale i odhalí skutečného viníka. Oproti Masonovi je však Ben Matlock spíše svérázný postarší lišák, který se nebojí v zájmu správného načasování odhalení dočasně působit jako hlupák.
